After a number of great gigs aboard the Queen of the Mississippi with the Rousters, the family loaded up the van and headed to Colorado. We had some epic hangs in Boulder with the Eubanks and tons of great friends including the folks from Treklite Gear and some old St. Louis pals. Two nights of Dead and Co. at Folsom Field was refreashing and I am truly forever grateful. Time to chill so we headed to Lyons for a number of days that we spent floating the St. Vrain, camping in Levern Johnson Park, picking tunes at Oskar Blues, and playing vintage arcade games. Lyons holds a special place in my heart and I am thankful for another great visit. Rocky Mountain National Park also never disappoints and I am still rapping my head around the vast beauty that we encountered.

From San Cristobal de las Casas and to the Lexington

The last two weeks have been two of the most amazing and spiritual I have had in a long time. I was honored to travel to Chiapas and help represent Paducah at the Sabores y Saberes UNESCO Gastronomical Event. The food, art, and music that we brought were not only welcomed and praised but also met by the same from others from around the world. I cannot express my gratitude for the support in being a part of such an once in a lifetime event.

Upon arriving back in Kentucky I was quickly graced with another great festival, as I travel to Lexington on behalf of the McCracken County Public Library to present and perform at the Kentucky Old Time Music Gathering. Folks from all over the country came to share in Kentucky and again the stories and songs that I brought were not only welcomed and praised but also met by the same from others from around the country.

Friends… Friends… Friends… How blessed I am to have and continue to find so many special friends.

Music is a connector. While it is a language, it also breaks through languages. Multiple times over the last two weeks I have witnessed the magic of music pass through language, political, and cultural barriers, and bring love and compassion to the world.

March 5, 2017
Charlie Stamper and Scottie Henson

It’s a blessing to be able to reflect back on two Kentucky musical legends who passed away recently. Charles H.”Charlie” Stamper (Jan. 28, 1930 – Feb . 21, 2017) and Scottie Mitchell Henson (Jan. 15, 1941 – Mar. 2, 2017) paved the way for numerous talented artist such as Clayton Campbell (The Gibson Brothers), Cody Campbell (The Van-Dells), J.D. Wilkes (The Legendary Shack Shakers), Josh Williams (Rhonda Vincent and the Rage), Logan Oakley (Bawn In The Mash), Justin and Jason McKendree (The McKendree’s), John Austin McDaniel, and many others.

I was honored to have known these two great men and learned from both. While Charlie was born in Hindman, KY and spent some time in Arizona, he also built a house on Barkley Lake, where I along with Josh Coffey, accompanied J.D. Wilkes and Layne Hendrickson to record his album “Glory to the Meeting House.” We also performed at the Land Between the Lakes, Homeplace Pickin’ Party one hot June. He was a humble man who’s powerful fiddle cut through the room and eased your troubles.

From the time that I first played the Opry in 1995, Scottie Henson was always there to welcome me with a smile. Like his cabin in Marshall County, KY near Kentucky Lake, his banjo playing and tone was as natural as hit stage presence, acting, and improvisation.

I recall one night some years back while live onstage and unrehearsed when Scottie was introducing me. I noted that it had been awhile since I had been to the Opry and that they had since gotten new wireless microphones to which Scottie replied, “We couldn’t afford the wires.

Both Charlie and Scottie will be remembered for all the great musical gifts that they left. Celebrations are being held today in Cadiz and Benton for these great men who were never to busy to share a smile. I am thankful for the good times.

Festivals, Steamboats and BBQ!!!

Bawn in the Mash has had a wild end of summer. We spent Labor Day with our good friends at Ondessonk, at one of the most pristine places left in Southern Illinois. We also had an amazing time opening of the Infamous Stringdusters at Terrapin Hill Harvest Festival, where we spent the late night jamming with the Rumpke Mountain Boys… I think?! Last weekend we spent with our ol’ pal Chris Henry, performing at the 2014 Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion. It was great to my buddies Brett Radliff, Adrian Powell, Dave Stallard, Josh Oliver and so many more familiar faces.I also had a interesting time singing a couple of river songs with Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton and Frank Fairfield in the wee hours of the morning. If you haven’t heard either one of their music, make sure you check it out. And oh yeah somewhere in the midst of all of this I had the great opportunity to guide some historical tours for the fine folks visiting Paducah on the American Queen. Life is grand….Coming up this week is
